In our language tandems, two participants teach each other their respective native languages without any pressure and on their own schedule.
We’ll help you find your language partners.
Languages are the gateway to the world. They foster intercultural competence and are more essential than ever for a successful career in today’s modern, globalized professional world.
We offer students a variety of courses in foreign languages and sign language. Our programs are open to all regularly enrolled students at HHU and their international peers. Our language courses follow the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and can be counted toward academic credit.
To ensure that participants in our language courses have as consistent a language proficiency level as possible—especially those who have not yet taken a language course with us—placement tests based on the C-Test model are administered before the start of advanced English, French, and Spanish courses. Alternatively, internationally recognized language certificates that are no more than two years old may be submitted. Registration for our placement tests and language courses is done via the online course catalog HIS-LSF.

To get an initial idea of your language proficiency level, you can take a free online self-assessment test in advance.
This self-assessment is not binding and does not replace a formal placement test. It is intended solely to help you gauge your level and assess your own abilities! Please do not use a dictionary during the placement tests, as this will skew the results!
